The Big Story: What America Can Learn From Germany About Atonement
We still haven’t figured out how to memorialize the sins of our history. Our polarized society is fixated on this issue, but we’re nowhere close to an answer. In December’s cover story, Atlantic staff writer Clint Smith, the author of the best-selling book How the Word is Passed, visits Germany to understand how the Holocaust is memorialized there. He asks the question, what can America learn about commemorating American slavery from Germany? Join editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg, who will talk with Smith about these fraught and fascinating issues.
